Learning Stlyes

As a designer I feel that if we can also teach the viewer, then the value of our message is with a higher purpose. When we trying to communicate with people expanding our reach to touch different learning styles we make communication more effective. A simple and often-used model categories people as visual learners (65 percent of population), auditory learners (30 percent) or physical/tactile learners (5 percent). Research shows that on average, students who learn from reading alone only retain about 10 percent of the content. Whereas they retain 26 percent of what they hear, 30 percent of what they see, 50 percent of what they see and hear, 70 percent of what they say themselves, and 90 percent of what they say while doing something. This is evident with popularity of online tutorials and video demos today. In addition the use of type strengthens the percentage of viewers who watched the complete video, making multimedia presentation a very powerful tool. Our tools are changing and the way we learn and present information is impacted. I believe we will be seeing more video on the web in the years to come. With You Tube stats May, 2010 at 2 billion views a day, and thousands of high school and junior high students receiving formal training in shooting and editing video at school this media will be central to connecting people with content.

Research & Models

The research that leads this idea began with museum web sites and the challenges they face with providing an onsite experience to people online. The key is the human ingredient and public experience. Truthful expression of personality with transparency of behind the scenes efforts, thoughts and inspirations brings features alive. As graphic designers working with various media our job is to communicate the story. Whether it is a poster, flyer, logo, ad or video it is the very first moments that impact our audience.
Today the web has become a primary resource for information, communication and connection. Multi-media video is a quick effective tool that combines graphic elements and addresses various learning styles in one contact. We can listen, read & see content up close, catching all forms of learning styles. No wonder the popularity of this media is growing at such a rapid pace.

Framework that Creates a Narrative

The framework is based on structure used in the art history classroom, which includes subject, place, material, influence, style, function and context; that all combine to create a story. This story should strive to be transparent, evocative and direct. It can be achieved in varying detail or length according to amount of information, audience and purpose. It can also be applied to a variety of media choices (print, branding, advertising…) that creates a solid unified communication package. It is through this framework that we can develop questions for interviews, select text that can be emphasized, generate imagery that is meaningful and ultimately create a narrative.

Multimedia - Opening the Online Experience

Multimedia video can open the online experience offered to visitors on-site. Drawing on educational framework used in art history classroom and multimedia graphic design I want to introduce – visual dialogue as connection - in a unified graphic application of type, image and sound. Of particular importance is the idea that organizing levels of information in narrative presentation will help to draw the viewer into a more visceral experience.

Connecting People to Content - Senior Project, USFSP

Inspiration for this senior project began with the experiences of studying and understanding art history. Making meaningful connections to artist and their work changed my ideas about society and myself. From the earliest cave art to contemporary works a need to express and communicate is the basis of our humanity. As a graphic designer my objective is to present various information to people in an effective way, ultimately connecting people to content.
